Firstly there are two articles for this listed on it the 60 min version and the other is the 15 min version of teh break out. lets face facts they are both break outs regardless of the time frame. The video in the article was made in 2004 and since then I have not really seen a better example highlighting all the reasons why I trade the way I trade on a chart and as a result has not been updated. The targets for intraday ranges are different in that I use this pattern as a trigger into a larger intraday move. Swing trade targets are still the same as described. What I will endeavor to do with this thread is prodive examples of how I trade this pattern. I will not be posting real time examples as I have other commitments with my own site but I will hopefully post real time snags take at the time of the set ups. Range Break Outs form the basis of my core trading. Generally speaking I call most consolidation patterns a range whether it is a triangle in one of its many guises, a head and shoulder pattern, and so on. The point is to identify a period on the chart when price is contracting which then should lead to a period of expansion. By keeping it simple and not trying to figure out what the pattern is called I can reduce the thinking time significantly and the actual time involved whilst trading as a pattern develop and progresses through its various stages of development as one pattern develops into another and different (text book) rule sets need to be applied. What I am therefore interested in is where are the consolidation patterns extreme levels of support and resistance. This way i can treat them all in the same way and not have to worry about what it is called, has it broken a trend line Is it a genuine break of the pattern This list of questions can go on and on depending on the pattern and how price action develops. The two range patterns that I distinguish between are Intraday or overnight ranges Swing or Longer term ranges The only notable difference between the two set ups is the way I identify a target. Once the range has been identified I can then think about how best to go about trading it. Generally speaking the move into the range dictate the most likely direction of the break out move, 65 of the time it is a continuation pattern 35 of the time it is a reversal pattern. With this figure in mind, if the move into the range is up I will be looking for reversals off the low (more on this later) and break outs of the high of the range. Rules for trading the range once identified. Trade the first pullback after the break out of the established range. Stop loss goes past the event that caused me to get into the trade Targets for intraday trades are based on an average days movement Targets for swing trading (longer term) ranges are the height of the pattern added to the break out point. Ideally the overnight range should have developed near the previous days high or low for higher probability trade set ups. If the overnight range is in the middle of the previous days high low range then this becomes a lower probability set up. (usually price will be consolidating in the bigger picture) If price is in the middle of a larger range then it is also not the best location to look for a trading opportunity. Waiting for price to be at the range highs or lows and assess for reversals or breaks is the highest probability option. Looking at a quick example, once the overnight range has been identified and in an ideal location I am now waiting for the pattern to break out of its consolidation. Once price has broken out of the range, to avoid getting into a false break out situation, to enter the trade I am looking for the first corrective bar or a pullback. My current usual routine is to start looking for this pullback on the 89 tick chart. (if you dont have access to tick charts then a 2 or 3 minute chart will work just as well). After this IF the pullback develops but does not trigger the entry order I will then move up to the next time frame as price continues to develop a pullback on the 15 min chart then the 60 min charts. Now my entry has been identified by the first pullback after the break out the stop loss, also identified by the same pattern, is going past the event that caused me to get into the trade. The way the I currently manage my trades is to remove the risk on the trade by scaling out a portion of the position. This is a simple formulae. I trade in multiples of 3 lots, I will look to remove 23rds at 50 of the size of the stop loss size. For example, If I have a 30 pip stop loss 50 of the stop loss size is 15 pips, 23rds of the position will be removed at 15. The last 13rd of the trade remains with its original stop loss level. If this last 13rd gets stopped out then I will have overall a break even trade. 2 x 15 30 pips 1 x -30 -30 pips Profit on overall position 0 pips After this I have a risk free trade and my final target is based on an average days movement (discussed previously - see my site) Following the same philosophy, identify the range, wait for price to trade past the range boundaries. wait for price to pullback this creates the entry and stop loss levels. Target is the height of the pattern added to the break out point. The Winners checklist: Is the company making money This may sound pretty basic, but just because a company has a great product and strong advertising doesnt mean they are making money. Revenues, profits, and a strong balance sheet are the foundation of any company in which you would consider investing. To do a quick check on the current revenue, profit, and balance sheet of a stock you are considering, go to finance. yahoo and enter the stock symbol and submit. From here you can use the links on the bottom left of the page for the companys income statement and balance sheet. Be relentless on this one. A nice level of profit for a company is at least 0.10 times the revenues. Profits less than this may signal problems with the companys fundamental business model. Click the Balance Sheet tab to view the balance sheet. Estude o balanço patrimonial. How much money does the company owe others (the Total Liabilities line is bold) How do their assets look (the Total Assets line is in bold) High debt can strap a company for decades. Is the PE much higher or lower than other companies in the same sector The PE (Price Earning Ratio) compares the stocks price to its earnings. A high number here means the stock price may be high for the amount of earnings the company is actually throwing off. A low number does not necessarily mean the stock is undervalued. It may point to some other problems. The important thing is to compare the PE for a company to others in the same industry. Go to biz. yahoopindustries. html and enter the stock symbol then click on the View Industry button. An industry and sector summary will appear along with information on the stocks in the same industry. Look for the PE column heading. Note the industry average then scroll down to the company you entered. If the stocks PE is 20 higher or lower than the industry average, you might want to take this one off your list. Does the chart point to a rising stock price Some investors are religious about chart watching. They live and die by complex chart patterns, calculations, and esoteric cues. This level of analysis would be nice but is probably not needed for longer-term investors. Go to bigcharts and enter a stock symbol then click on the Quick Chart Button for the one year chart. Eyeball the chart and look for any trends. If the stock price looks like its on the downside of the roller coaster then find another stock. If the stock is on the upside of the coaster, great. But if the stock is really hitting some new highs not seen for the last year, then there better be a good reason. The worst thing is to buy a stock after it has hit a new high then watching it drop down. There are all kinds of good patterns and bad patterns to look for and those are great for the chart fanatics. But heres the easy way: Go to quotes. barcharttexpert. asp symaol and enter a stock symbol then click on the arrow at the right of the entry box. Buy or Sell statistics based on the stocks chart patterns will appear. Scroll down and you will see an overall buy and sell percentage. The higher the buy percentage the better. If your stock has a high sell percentage (over 35) or low buy percentage (under 50) you probably want to take it off your list. At the bottom of the display you will see numbers for the stocks Support and Resistance. Support is the historical stock price the stock has not fallen below for a while. Resistance is the historical stock price the stock has had a hard time rising above. If the current price is at or even just below the Resistance level, you probably should take it off your list. Has all the recent news been good Bad news can kill a stocks price and keep it down for a long time. Unfortunately good news does not seem to have the same kind of lasting effect on a stock. Good news may give the stock a short-term pop but it seems like investors remember bad news for a long time. Much longer than they remember good news. Some news sites will filter stories (i. e. Bloomberg, Yahoo, Wall Street Journal) because they seem to favor their own internal resources. To do a good news search you need to use a source that shows most everything on a company. To check the news on a stock go to newsalert and enter a stock symbol then click on the GO button. Headlines for recent news stories will appear in the lower part of the display. Look for bad news. Click More Stories. and go back a few months to see if there was any bad news as much as two or three months back. Wouldnt it be great if this site had a search forward feature. You could check your stocks next earnings report a few months away. But that would probably not be a free service. Are company insiders holding onto their stock Company executives and board members usually receive large stock grants. What they do with that stock can be very telling. No one knows more about a companys prospects than the CEO, CFO and board members. Is there a hot new product on the horizon or a pending accounting scandal These people will know long before the general public. Normally these insiders are smart people who know the worth of a dollar. If they think the companys stock will value over the coming years, they will hold that stock no matter what. If they think the stock is headed down, they will dump it. Why should you buy the stock if insiders are tripping over each other to sell theirs Go to moneycentral. msninvestorinvsubinsidertrans. asp Symbolaol and enter your stock symbol then click on the Go button. A list of recent insider stock sales will appear. You can also click the Planned Sales link on this page (or go to moneycentral. msninvestorinvsubinsiderplanned. asp Symbolaol ) to get a look at pending insider sales that are in the pipeline. A certain amount of insider sales may be expected for tax reasons or to re-balance a personal portfolio. So dont be too alarmed by several sales. Something to look for is a complete lack of sales. If you find a stock where all the insiders are holding onto their stock or the sales are low compared to the number of company shares outstanding, then you might have found a potential winner. Can you profitably hedge your way into the stock We all took some lumps over the last few years on stocks that dropped in price. If more investors used simple hedging techniques, the pain probably would not have been as bad. No matter how great a stock looks, it can still drop the day after you buy it. But if you use a simple hedging technique known as covered call writing you will be protected against a potential drop in the stocks price. If a stock costs 35 a share and you can hedge the stock purchase by 5 to 10 in the first 60 days, you will sleep a lot better on those nights after the stock drops. By continuing to hedge month after month you should be able to create a price cushion in the neighborhood of 20 to 30. If you cant hedge your way into the stock, why take on all the risk of just buying the stock alone To test if you can hedge your way into the stock, go to poweropt and scroll down the right edge of the page until the Market Data and Analysis box appears. Enter your stock symbol in the Covered Calls box and click on the - button. A table will appear with your stocks current price and a series of ways to hedge into the stock. The Strike column shows the target price for the stock for the month shown and the Opt. Licitação. For long term investors, researching specific sectors and choosing a portfolio of various stocks will help you to diversify without holding positions that are related. This is a major problem many investors, and traders make. They hold positions in stocks that are related and then when one goes down, they all go down. Many times professional traders actually look for related stocks in the same sector that are not performing the same as each other. This can lead to an opportunity for a short term trade to allow one stock to catch up to the other in regards to its longer term position as far as percentages are concerned. Looking for those opportunities and the reasoning behind it can be a little complicated to understand. It would require a little more room to explain in detail than I have here on this page, but just be aware that it is generally not a good idea to hold too many positions in any one related industry at a time. (Unless of course, luck is in your corner and you wind up picking a sector that booms) Here are some common stock sectors to look into for trading opportunities. This is only a partial list: Drugs Managed Care Medical Equipment Automotive Transportation Industrial Advertising One of the benefits of targeting specific sectors is that you can learn to become an expert in one area and learn what moves that sector. This will give you an advantage in your trading as compared to having to know about 100s of stocks and every bit of news that comes out and how it will effect the many stocks you may be following. Targeting 1 or 2 sectors will also enable you to know what stock charts to watch when looking for trading opportunities. Take Oil for example. You can pay attention to stock charts and news on companies like Exxon Mobil and Chevron as well as watch current crude oil prices before entering and exiting trades. There were people who traded who did not even know that there was a model that had a rough ability to keep the values of the options in-line relative to each other. In fact, many of the stocks listed on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) at that time did not have puts. This caused the relationships to be even more esoteric, because you could not anchor to anything on the other side. I got lucky because most of the stocks I traded were issued puts early on. In general, trading was the Wild West because of this general lack of understanding about options. There have been plenty of books written about the early days, so I would not want to be boring or repetitive, but suffice it to say, in 1978, there were about one thousand people involved This had ramifications in and of its own, because without any interest in trading things closer to being in-line, someone trading on fair values could wait a long time (maybe even only at expiration) for things to be priced properly. Thus, a trader may not get paid until long after the strategy was entered into. Nonetheless, the trader I clerked for had an approach to trading that depended on a model to a great degree. That meant as a clerk, I got to use It was 1978, less than a year after the Commodore Personal Electronic Translator (PET) 2001 came out as an answer to time-shared computing, and we were logging into The Metro Center mainframe with our Texas Instruments (TI) keyboard terminals to calculate theoretical values of the positions we had. Wed punch in our days trades and the aggregate value was printed out on the heat-sensitive paper that scrolled out of the back of the all-purpose keyboard. At the time, no one brought values into a crowd. Even more important, very few trusted the values. After all, who knew how to calculate an implied volatility, or interpret a dividend stream Vol surface was a term that was not to be uttered for at least another decade. But my exposure to the mainframes ability to point to some form of order in this life was going to be helpful down the road. A few months later, when I began to trade, I had no specific approach to the marketplace whatsoever. Seat of the pants they called it back then. Sell em when you can, not when you have to, was a basic catchphrase There were spreaders who had longer holding periods: spreaders who put on intermediate to long-term positions and held them all the way until expiration. These spreads ran the gamut from verticals, ratios, and calendars. There were spread scalpers who focused on one particular spread and were the master of that spread and traded in and out of that spread, based on what they perceived to be undervalued and overvalued of the the stock price. There were all-out premium sellers who did nothing but sell out-of-the-money options. They sold puts when they thought the market was going up, and sold calls when they thought the market was going down, and adjusted their positions by selling even more options if the market went against them (sold even more if the market was going down, and more puts if the market was going up against their core position). A lopsided spreader is a trader that oversold the out-of-the-money options and constructed the spread to yield a credit. For example, ratio spreaders would buy at-the-money options and then sell multiple out-ofthe - money options against them. Directional speculators would build an option position, and then if they were wrong about the market direction, they would trade the stock in the opposite direction. Later came the theoretical traders who would bring their reams of fair value sheets out in the crowd. Many traders thought they were nuts. How did market makers price their bids and offers at that time for granted today There were sheets produced by the clearing firm called PLOT summaries that would graph the profit and loss over price and time that had had an equivalent stock position (ESP). They were produced overnight, however, and were not that good. For example, if volatility started to move up or down and completely changed the characteristics of your position, they would be useless, because they would not be updated until the following evening. Traders would also manage risk in terms of raw units. In other words, the trader would calculate the net calls and net puts of the position (including the synthetic calls and synthetic puts generated by any underlying position and create brackets based on strikes). They would then focus on those brackets that would show where they had risk. Eventually I broke down my position into groups of spreads whose risk parameters I understood well. What vanilla strategies were commonly used at that time One-by-two spreads. For example, buying one at-the-money call and selling two out-of-the-money calls. Or buying one at-the-money put and selling two out-of-the-money puts. Traders would try to put these on for even money or a credit and then let time decay work for them, increasing the value of the spread. Vertical spreads. For example, bull spreads and bear spreads using calls and puts in which the trader had a directional bias and would build a position that had appetizing riskreward ratio where they could risk one dollar to make three dollars, if they were correct.
